Jakes Youth Day

This past May 2005,  Jakes Youth Day was held at River Oaks Range. The event is co-sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Merced/Mariposa NRA Members’ Council and Safety First Shooting Association.

Forty-nine youngsters had a great time learning to be safe in the woods and on the firing line.

The day began with morning classes to familiarize the kids with safe shooting practices, the fundamentals of various firearms actions, and California Fish and Game Hunting regulations.

After lunch, the kids broke into seven groups and had a chance to experience several disciplines, some for the first time. Stages were set for .22 Rifle, Black Powder Rifle, Shotgun, Archery, Tomahawk throwing, Compass use/Map reading, and Wild Turkey calling.

It was a beautiful day and the smiles on everyone’s faces made it very gratifying for all. Jakes Youth Day will again be scheduled in the near future. Be sure to sign up early when the application becomes available! We are limited to fifty kids and their parents or guardians
