What is Cowboy Action Shooting?

Cowboy Action Shooting is a multi-faceted shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single action revolvers, pistol caliber lever action rifles, and old time shotguns. The shooting competition is staged in a unique, characterized, "Old West" style. It is a timed sport in which shooters compete for prestige on a course of different shooting stages.

Each scenario, as they are called, features an array of situations, many based on famous incidents or movies scenes, in which the shooters must test their mettle against steel targets.

The River Oaks Regulators plan to affiliate with SASS (Single Action Shooting Society), and SASS rules will apply. For information on the fastest growing shooting sport of Cowboy Action Shooting, visit the SASS website HERE.

Getting started in Cowboy Action Shooting

Captain George Baylor has created “This Web Site” to help folks get started in Cowboy Action Shooting.

There are hundreds of videos out there to show you examples of and tell you about Cowboy Action Shooting (SASS). Please be advised the following links can and may lead to content not related to SASS. Safety First Shooting Association is not responsible for content viewed when leaving our web site.

Items the Cowboy Club is looking for:

Steel plates suitable for targets: This could be just about any piece of flat steel at least 3/8 of an inch thick. Just about any shape would work in sizes not much bigger that 24”x24” and down to 8”x8”.

Rebar or round steel 5/8 diameter: This is used to make the target stands.
Example of targets seen HERE.

Large wire spools: I’m looking for a couple of these to be the wheels on a wagon and to use as tables to stage the long guns on.

Plywood and 2x4’s/2x6’s: To be used for props

Paint: Paint for the props.

Pieces of clean carpet: These are used on the table tops and top of props to cushion placement of firearms.

Example of props: Scene HERE.
